Environmental benefits

On January 1, 2003, deposits became mandatory for most kinds of disposable beverage packaging in Germany. The federal government introduced this policy to encourage people to consume more beverages in recyclable packaging. However, packaging is exempt from this ruling if it is ruled as being environmentally friendly — like Capri-Sonne.

The decision about whether or not a kind of packaging is ecologically friendly comes down to its environmental impact, which is determined by the German Federal Environment Agency in conjunction with independent research institutes. They review the effects that packaging has on the environment — everything from how the raw materials are derived to how the packaging is made and used all the way to the logistics and disposal processes.

In 2001, the highly regarded ifeu-Institut (German website) prepared an impact review of Capri-Sonne's pouch and presented it to the Federal Environment Agency . The Capri-Sonne pouch was compared with two other kinds of recyclable packaging the government had already classified as being environmentally friendly: composite cardboard and recyclable glass bottles. They found that all three kinds of packaging were equivalent to each other from an environmental perspective.

More detailed information about environmental impact is available in the brochure "Der Capri-Sonne Trinkpack – Verpackung und Umwelt" (German only) which can be ordered directly from Capri-Sonne.

Even though the Capri-Sonne pouch has already been declared to be environmentally friendly, Capri-Sonne is always looking for new ways to keep optimizing its current packaging. Environmental protection is a key issue throughout the company. Material management is analyzed and the resources are minimized; the ongoing goal is to guarantee product quality while also protecting the environment.
